In the last couple of decades, as I dashed across the globe hopping between continents to build global brands, I’ve witnessed countless tech, workforce and media revolutions. But here’s the plot twist of 2025: The most successful founders aren’t just mastering AI algorithms—they’re mastering the algorithm of human emotion.

Welcome to the era where emotional intelligence meets AI, and the magic happens in the intersection—with a dash of smart marketing. Because let’s face it, you can have the best product in the world, but if your audience doesn’t feel connected to it, you’re just another fancy gadget gathering dust.

The Empathy Paradox

As AI gets better at data analysis, human emotional intelligence becomes exponentially more valuable. In my portfolio, the startups scaling successfully aren’t just the ones with the best AI stack—they’re the ones where leaders can read the room while reading the data. Turns out, understanding human psychology is the ultimate competitive advantage that AI can’t replicate. The same goes for marketing. The brands winning hearts (and wallets) aren’t just pushing ads—they’re crafting narratives that make people feel something.

The Intelligence Marriage

AI can help predict market trends, but it can’t navigate the nuanced dynamics of a stressed team during a pivot or a frustrated customer ready to rage-post on Twitter. The winning formula I’m seeing combines AI’s analytical precision with a leader’s emotional intuition and translates into smart marketing. It’s about using AI to inform decisions while using EQ to implement them. Think of it as having both a powerful GPS and the wisdom to know when to take the scenic route.

And if you’re running a brand? AI can tell you what your customers are clicking on, but EQ is what gets them to hit “buy” (and come back for more) and smart marketing communicates this effectively.

The Scale Equation

Here’s what keeps founders up at night: How do you maintain cultural cohesion while scaling at AI speed? The answer lies in what I call empathetic automation—using AI to handle the scalable while preserving human touch for the valuable. The best leaders (and brands) are creating frameworks where AI amplifies rather than replaces human connection. If your marketing sounds like a bot, your customers will treat you like one—cold, transactional and disposable. The real magic? Scaling without losing your soul.

The Decision Matrix

Smart founders are building decision-making frameworks that blend AI insights with emotional intelligence. When AI flags a potential issue, high-EQ leaders know how to investigate the human story behind the data. The same principle applies to marketing—great brands don’t just chase trends, they decode why those trends matter to their audience. AI can tell you what is trending, but EQ helps you figure out how to make it resonate. Data gets you in the game, but emotion makes you unforgettable.

The Culture Code

I look for leaders who understand that culture doesn’t scale through algorithms alone before writing them a check. The most resilient startup cultures are being built by founders who use AI for efficiency but rely on EQ for effectiveness. They’re creating environments where data informs but doesn’t dictate—and where customers feel seen, not just segmented. The same goes for marketing—if your customers don’t feel a connection, they’ll move on. The best brands don’t chase the optimization of conversion rates; they create a movement.

The Leadership Evolution

To summarize, the new breed of successful founders is not choosing between being data-driven or people-focused brands—they’re merging both. They use AI to identify opportunities and challenges while leveraging emotional intelligence to navigate the human implications of every decision. It’s not about AI versus EQ; it’s about human intelligence using AI to amplify EQ.

As an investor in this space, here’s my advice:

• For Founders: Your AI stack might help you scale, but your EQ (and how you market it) will help you succeed. Focus on cultivating your EQ and success will likely follow.

• For Investors: Start evaluating emotional intelligence as rigorously as you evaluate technical capability. Look for founders that embody this dual intelligence.

In a world where everyone has access to the same tech, what makes you different? The human touch, the story behind the numbers and the way you make people feel.
