Yet, behind their sleek interfaces lurks a risk: the seductive, addictive pull of AI agents that can reshape our social lives and emotional well-being.

The Dual Promise of AI Agents

AI agents are at the cutting edge of tech, offering a level of personalization that’s pretty mind-blowing. In classrooms, they act as virtual tutors, tailoring lessons to fit each student’s learning style. At home, they manage our schedules, answer our questions, and even chat like a friend. This adaptability makes our interactions with them feel almost human—warm, intuitive, and super convenient.

Focusing on the education sector, AI’s advantages are clear. They can transform learning by offering personalized tutoring and immediate feedback, can address the ever-growing scarcity of educators, and can also be useful on the mental health front. An example is the rollout of hybrid chatbots like Sonny, which is being used by certain school districts and is filling a crucial need in schools that cannot afford enough counsellors. These systems create a judgment-free space where students can express their worries and get prompt support—in a manner that’s beneficial in the context of mental health issues and also for other types of problems children and students are facing.

Indeed, reports from the last several days have spotlighted the trend of children and teens using AI agents, and how hybrid human-AI chatbots, such as “Sonny,” are being deployed to fill gaps, including counseling services in schools struggling with a severe shortage of counselors. With some schools averaging one counselor for every 376 students—and 17% of high schools without a counsellor at all—these digital tools are seen as a crucial stopgap.

But here’s the catch: the same features that make AI agents and companions so appealing can also lead to overdependence. If students rely too much on these digital assistants, they might skip the critical process of wrestling with challenges and learning from their mistakes.

Moreover, AI agents’ human-like interaction, combined with their constant learning from our interactions—creates a loop where digital validation starts to replace genuine human connection. Over time, this dependency can blur the line between helpful support and unhealthy reliance—especially for young, impressionable minds.
And indeed, during the relatively short time AI agents are in use by younglings, tragic cases have already emerged. They include a teen suicide linked to an AI chatbot and lawsuits against companies for providing unsafe advice. These incidents highlight just how dangerous it can be when digital empathy starts replacing real human support.

AI Agents and Addictive Engagement: Gamification and Emotional Manipulation

What makes AI agents particularly dangerous for children is how they’re almost by design addictive. With smart gamification techniques—like intermittent rewards, push notifications, and personalized feedback loops—interactions feel like mini-games that trigger dopamine surges. Because children’s brains are still developing, they’re especially vulnerable to reward systems, which are often used and can lead to a growing reliance on digital validation at the expense of real-world social skills and critical thinking.

Over time, this cycle can diminish our ability to enjoy genuine human interactions—which, though they sometimes involve criticism, friction, and disagreements, are essential for our emotional and social development. Lacking these authentic interactions is particularly risky for kids, because, again, their still-developing brains are more prone to these digital “hooks.”

Regulatory Gaps in the Rapidly Evolving World of AI Agents

Even though AI agents hold enormous potential, our current regulatory frameworks aren’t keeping pace. Laws like COPPA primarily focus on data privacy and consent, leaving the psychological impacts of AI addiction largely unaddressed. Similarly, various states’ legislation focusing on consumer protection, too, addresses other aspects of AI risks and does not address hazards that are related to psychological manipulations nor to children’s specific exposures. This regulatory gap leaves especially vulnerable populations, like children and teens, at risk from the manipulative, addictive nature of these systems.

Policymakers face a tough challenge: how do you regulate AI agents without putting a damper on innovation? There’s a clear need for updated ethical guidelines and safety-by-design mandates that not only protect user data but also limit the behavioral manipulation inherent in these tools. How can this be achieved?
