What can you expect in the job market for 2025? Inside the mixed messages of economic expansion and corporate contraction, a number of myths persist. By separating fact from fiction, you can make informed decisions about your career. Here are five of the most common employment myths—and the truths behind them.
1. Your Manager Has Your Back
Myth: Your manager is your strongest ally in your career progression.
Reality: In reality, your manager’s back might be up against the wall. Your manager’s position might not be secure – so how can he or she provide the support you need? Major corporations like Meta and Bayer have embraced flatter organizational structures, reducing middle management layers in favor of self-directed work teams. When Gartner predicts that by 2026 AI-driven automation will have eliminated nearly one-third of routine white-collar jobs globally, management is at risk. Take precautions: get prepared for a world where self-leadership is what matters most.
So, does that mean you shouldn’t trust your manager? Actually, it means the exact opposite. Busting this myth means working hard to earn your boss’s trust. Collaboration and connection are the building blocks of your career success, in every industry. Want to succeed in your career? Make sure your boss knows that you’ve got their back. Your supervisor is a person, too – your manager needs people that he or she can count on. Don’t mistrust your manager – and don’t miss an opportunity to show your supervisor that they can rely on you. That starts by honoring your commitments – and showing the receipts.
2. The Job Market is Shrinking
Myth: Employment opportunities are drying up.
Reality: While traditional job markets may seem uncertain, the labor landscape is evolving, not contracting. It’s a question of perspective – and what career you are trying to pursue. Data from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) shows an unprecedented surge in small business loan applications, indicating a rise in entrepreneurial ventures. Additionally, the gig economy continues to flourish. A January report from Draup predicts that the gig economy is expanding three times faster than the total US workforce, and over 50% of U.S. workers will participate in the gig economy by 2027. While jobs in tech might be scarce, for example, small business entrepreneurship is an opportunity that many have seized. Traditional jobs may be shrinking, but is your ability to come up with creative earning solutions growing? Look for opportunities where you can be of service, without jeopardizing your current position. Want to access new opportunities? Consider the simple question that has helped my consulting practice to thrive: “Do you want some help with that?” Look for problems worth solving, and don’t get lost in how the problem gets solved. It might not be a “job” – but there are many ways to earn money in the age of AI.
3. High-Paying Jobs Are Scarce
Myth: Six-figure jobs are out of reach for most workers.
Reality: High-paying roles are accessible, according to multiple articles on Forbes – you just have to know where to look. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) highlights positions such as commercial pilots, elevator installers, and web developers, which offer median salaries exceeding $100,000 – without the requirement of a college degree. With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), well-paid roles in AI development and machine learning are in high demand.
Organizations like Nvidia and online platforms like Coursera offer free or low-cost courses in AI and related fields, democratizing access to these high-paying careers. By embracing lifelong learning, job seekers can turn perceived scarcity into abundant opportunity. Don’t let some myth rob you from seeing possibility – keep exploring, and come up with innovative ways to upskill your career.
4. Gen Z Has Wrong Priorities for the Job Market
Myth: Gen Z workers are primarily motivated by salary and compensation
Reality: Be suspicious of any stereotype, especially around Gen Z. A study by McKinsey & Company reveals that Gen Z employees prioritize career development and meaningful work over compensation. In fact, they are the only age group that does not cite inadequate compensation as the top reason for leaving a job, instead valuing opportunities for growth and purpose in their work. As a coach who works with thousands of Gen Z (and Gen Alpha) folks each year, my experience of these generations defies derogatory stereotypes that many believe. However, your mileage may vary.
Want to attract Gen Z employees? Consider how your are cultivating careers for the youngest generation – especially when managers are going the way of the pager and the fax machine.
For Gen Z job seekers, as well as those currently employed, there’s one skill that can make a difference in your career. And your career search. In the age of AI, do you know what it is?
5. Career Stability Requires Staying in One Industry
Myth: Switching industries leads to career instability.
Reality: Career pivots can lead to greater job security and satisfaction. A 2024 LinkedIn Workforce Report found that 42% of job seekers successfully transitioned into new industries, leveraging transferable skills such as project management, data analysis, and customer relations. Want to move ahead? Time to concentrate on transferrable skills – and focus on how you communicate those talents. What industry would be most exciting to you, right now? Remember, you can do almost anything – if you don’t talk yourself out of it first. That’s what can happen when you believe a myth – you talk yourself out of discovery, before your investigation even begins. In this case, the market didn’t stop you. You did. Your acceptance of a myth creates a cage for your career.
Emerging fields like renewable energy, blockchain technology, and sustainable manufacturing offer fertile ground for career shifts. And new jobs are emerging every day, around the ever-expanding role of AI in the workplace. By identifying how existing skills apply to new sectors, job seekers can open doors to unexpected opportunities.
